How to work with a copywriter

Never worked with a copywriter before? Here’s a quick guide to how I approach each project.

"

The scope

I first need to understand the scope to give you an accurate quote. We start with a quick chat, either by phone or email, where you can fill me in on what you’re looking for, and I’ll let you know whether I can help. After this, I’ll send you a briefing document to fill out.

The proposal

Next, I’ll send you a proposal outlining the details of the job with pricing, timings and my terms and conditions. You sign this to lock it in.

The upfront payment

I charge 50% upfront. Once this has come through, we get started. I’ll invoice you for the final 50% when I send you the first draft.

The full brief

Now I really get to know you and your project. I’ll ask you questions about your audience, objectives and key messages. We can clink coffee cups if you work nearby or keep our slippers on and meet online.

The creation

Once you’ve sent through any needed materials, it’s time for me to get crafting. Eep! This is my favourite bit. The timing of your first draft depends on the scope of your project and whether I need to do research, but we’ll have agreed on this earlier.

The drafts and amends

Generally, I’ll do three versions of your documents (first, second, and final draft), giving you two rounds of amends. Often it only takes one round of amends, especially if we’ve been working together for a while.

The review

It’s over to you for a final review and sign-off. You’re good to go!

The love

My business is built on word of mouth and referrals. I ask my clients for testimonials because nothing beats a good recommendation. I work as an ongoing trusted advisor for many clients when they need me, as an extension of their team. Don’t be a stranger.
